SimMan

http://www.ur.umn.edu/umnnews/Feature_Stories/One_very_smart_mannequin.html

SimMan™ Universal Simulator - SimMan, manufactured by Laerdal, is a reproduction of an average-size adult patient and includes realistic weight distribution and joint articulation. SimMan™ was designed for use as a tool to teach cognitive and critical thinking pathways and psychomotor skills. It can be used for education in crisis management of both typical and atypical difficult airways. It can also be adapted for use in teamwork training scenarios to study and enhance teamwork behaviors.
SimMan's features include:
* Integrated speakers allow for vocalization and sound effects for patient interaction
* Realistic heart, lung, and bowel sounds
* Dynamically-adjustable airway and pulmonary mechanics
* Carotid, femoral, brachial, and radial pulses provide appropriate absent, weak, or normal pulses matching systolic pressures.
• Chest compression / CPR-compatible and detection-enabled
* A pulse oximeter finger probe is provided; the display will show the SpO2 feedback once the probe is placed on the simulator's finger.
* Incorporates an articulated Blood Pressure Arm and articulated Multi-Venous IV Training Arm with simulated blood concentrate and IV set-up, providing the ability to obtain realistic flashback upon venous entry, to practice fluid infusion, and to push medications.
* Allows invasive interventions such as needle decompression, tube thoracostomy and surgical cricothyroidotomy
* Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections can be administered in the deltoid, gluteal and thigh areas.
* Interchangeable male and female genitalia and connectors are provided for use in urinary catheterization procedures

From Laerdal:

SimMan offers you the ability to provide simulation education to challenge and test your students clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient care scenarios. SimMan is extremely realistic and flexible to meet your multi-disciplinary educational needs.
- Patented airway system allows highly realistic simulation of all relevant difficult airway management and patient care situations
- Realistic practice of chest tube insertion
- Physiologically correct carotid, femoral, brachial and radial pulses
- Pre-programmed library of heart, lung, bowel and vocal sounds with an adjustable sound volume
- Blood pressure may be taken automatically, palpated or auscultated; Korotkoff sounds are synchronized with pulse
- ECG library of over 2,500 cardiac rhythm variants allows cardiac monitoring, defibrillation and external pacing
- IV training arm allows peripheral intravenous therapy
- Realistic male/female genitalia facilitates urologic procedures
- Simulated patient monitor and SimMan system can be operated using a PC and/or by hand-held remote controls

Laerdal Detailed:

Laerdal SimMan™ is designed for use as a tool for teaching psychomotor skills and cognitive and critical thinking pathways. It can be used for education in crisis management of both typical and non-typical difficult airways. ECG recognition and identification, defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, interpretation and treatment modalities of lethal and malignant cardiac related situations, obtaining of blood pressures and the auscultation, recognition, and treatment processes of a variety of heart, breath, bowel and vocal sounds. It is useful in the training of both individuals and teams of patient care providers.

Airway features:
• Realistic life-size intubation head.
• Bronchial tree is anatomically accurate in size, color and texture and features the accurate anatomical landmarks necessary to facilitate realistic fiberoptic bronchoscopy.
• Standard ALS airway skills:

- Bag/Valve Mask ventilation
- Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway placement
- Endotracheal tube intubation. Fiberoptic, light wand and retrograde intubation
- Combitube, LMA placement
- Trans-tracheal jet ventilation
- Needle and surgical cricothyrotomy

• Spontaneous respiration with variable respiratory rate, auscultation of breath sounds and CO2 detection.
• Airway complications: Pharyngeal obstruction, tongue oedema, trismus, laryngospasm, decreased cervical range of motion, decreased lung compliance, stomach distension, pneumothorax decompression.
•Conditions can be set for:
Cannot-Intubate-Can-Ventilate or Cannot-Intubate-Cannot-Ventilate conditions.

Cardiac functions:
• ECG library of over 2,500 cardiac rhythm variants.
• Defibrillation by Automated External Defibrillators (AED) or manual defibrillators
• 3 or 4 lead ECG monitoring.
• External pacing - with variable pacing threshold

CPR:
• Ventilation.
•Chest compression.
•ECG and heart rate can be displayed on the simulated monitor.

Pulses:
• Synchronized with ECG or compressions.
•Pulse strength dependent on BP selected and anatomical position.
•Bilateral carotid pulse, brachial, radial and femoral pulses

Blood Pressure:
• Can be taken automatically, palpated or auscultated.
•Blood pressure arm (left) with Korotkoff sounds synchronized with pulse.

Circulatory skills and IV drug administration:
• Articulating right IV training arm with replaceable skin and veins
•IV insertion into peripheral veins of forearm, antecubital fossa and the dorsum of the hand
•Sites for subcutaneous and intramuscular injections.

Sounds:
• Heart sounds synchronized with ECG
• Left and right lung sounds, bowel sounds
• Cough, vomiting, moaning and vocal sounds and simulation of patient voice
• Volume adjustment

Genitalia for urinary catheterization:
• Genitalia can be added to the simulator or urinary catheterization procedures.

Software control:
• Mouse and / or remote control
• Software controls all airway management, cardiac functions, CPR, pulse, blood presssure and sounds.
• Each of the airway management functions may be controlled individually from remote or set as a group.

Event log:
• Automatic log system with stopwatch function. Event Log can be saved or printed.

Easy to use scenario and trend tools:
• Standard validated scenarios included
• Design and save your own scenarios.

Simulated patient monitor:
• Displays ECG, BP, SpO2, ETCO2, arterial waveform, respiratory rate, heart rate and temperature readings
• SpO2 sound, variable pitch according to saturation
